Metal Technology’s architectural glazing systems have been used in HMP & YOI Stirling, the new, £85.7m state-of-the-art facility for women in custody in Scotland

Designed by Holmes Miller Architects and built by Morrison Construction for the Scottish Prison Service, the building’s unique design is aimed at creating a calm, therapeutic environment for rehabilitation and wellbeing.

The 100-place establishment avoids the use of conventional, high-security custodial glazing solutions, instead opting for a more welcoming design, with visual connections to the surrounding landscape to create a sense of openness and positivity, without compromising on security and safety. There are three clear zones: a two-storey front-of-house which forms the public face of the new facility, a central hub, and residential accommodation arranged around a central garden space. Metal Technology Ltd’s System 17 curtain walling, System 4-35Hi+ windows and System 5-20DHi+ doors were utilised through approved fabricator Linn-Tech Scotland Ltd.

Metal Technology’s windows, doors and curtain walling were also specified for two recent, smaller Community Custody Units in Scotland which follow the same revolutionary approach to women’s custodial buildings: The Bella Centre, Dundee (Ogilvie Construction Ltd, Oberlanders Architects, MT Fabricator – Scottech Limited) and The Lilias Centre, Maryhill, Glasgow (Ogilvie Construction, BakerHicks Architects, MT Fabricator – Scottech).

We are proud to have been involved in this innovative suite of custodial buildings, which provide dedicated environments for the care of women and are designed with a clear focus on therapy, education and recovery, with practice, tools and services that are trauma informed.

Metal Technology secure another ultra low carbon, Passive House education project in Currie, Edinburgh

We are delighted to be involved in another Passive House education project in Scotland – the new £65m Currie Community High School in Edinburgh, which will provide 1,000 student places with three floors of teaching blocks. The building will offer beautiful, light filled and healthy learning places and become a vibrant community hub, with outstanding health and fitness facilities, a Passivhaus swimming pool, a café, outdoor informal play spaces, a sensory garden, and public allotments.

To adhere to Passivhaus, the school will have better air quality, advanced insulation and greater airtightness. The Passivhaus standard aligns to Edinburgh Council’s net zero commitments that all new build and refurbishment projects should be sustainable. The building’s total energy usage will be reduced up to 70% compared to a traditional build school, making it significantly more cost effective to run.

Through approved fabricator Avtek, Metal Technology Ltd will supply a range of its architectural glazing products, to help deliver this outstanding education facility and inspiring environment for Currie’s pupils and the wider community. We are looking forward to working with the project team to deliver this fantastic, Passive House school which will be divided into two phases with an overall completion expected in 2025.

Scotland’s first Passivhaus Primary School opens its doors in Perth

The new Riverside Primary School was built in the grounds of North Muirton Primary School and accommodates pupils from both North Muirton and Balhousie Primary School.

Built to Passivhaus standards, where energy-saving measures are an integral part of the design, the building is 15-20 times more airtight than a traditional build and has 50 per cent reduced heat energy leakage. For those in the classroom, this means their new school will be comfortably cool in summer and warm in winter.

Metal Technology Ltd supplied its high-performance glazing systems for this state-of-the-art school and we’re delighted to have been involved in the first Passivhaus primary school in Scotland. Pupils have enjoyed regular site visits, discovering all about the advantages of their new school’s sustainable construction, which will be a fantastic new learning environment for all.
