A £9.5 million refurbishment and new build at the Academy was completed in December 2013 by BAM Construction with the school remaining operational throughout the project.

Working with architects Stride Treglown, BAM transformed the Academy’s estate in two phases, remodelling the 1980s-built science wing and ICT suite, building a new, three-storey block housing a theatre and dance-studio; and demolishing redundant buildings.

Metal Technology’s fully complementary systems were installed, providing structural integrity, weather performance, thermal enhancement and security across the scheme. System 9 Flush Glaze is a ground floor framing system that eliminates the need for unsightly beads which would otherwise detract from its attractive aesthetic qualities. The system allows for either single or double glazed configurations and offers a range of sections allowing the designer flexibility in design.

The System 10 commercial door offers single / double–action pivot doors, in both standard and anti-finger trap forms. A fully rebated option with butt hinges and double and single door leaf options are available with a variety of door jamb and stile formats. offering the designer the ability to achieve the entrance required.

Window treatments were comprehensive, with both 5-20Hi+ Thermally Enhanced Tilt and Turn and System 4-20Hi+ installed. These systems offer the designer a wide and diverse range of profiles. A highly cost-effective glazing solution, the System 4-20Hi+ complies with and in many cases exceeds current building regulations, as demanded by MAP’s policies.
