Woodland View School

A light-filled environment for a new ASN school in Kirkintilloch

Woodland View, an Additional Support Needs (ASN) school in Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire, Scotland, opened its doors to new students in August 2023. Designed by architectural practice NORR Group and delivered by McLaughlin & Harvey for East Dunbartonshire Council, the new £34.9m state-of-the-art education facility caters for 200 children and young people aged from 2 to 18 with complex needs. The purpose-built school is accessible to all pupils who have a range of physical disabilities, including wheelchair users, mobility difficulties, hearing, visual and other sensory impairments, as well as a range of learning difficulties.

The project incorporated Metal Technology Ltd’s high-performance curtain walling, windows and doors through approved fabricator Avtek Ltd, which assisted in creating flexible, light-filled spaces and an inspiring and welcoming learning environment. Products installed include: System 23 Louvre, System 17 Capped Curtain Walling, System 4-35 Hi+ Casement Windows and System 5-20D Hi+ Doors.

A sensory trail runs from the ground floor to the first floor and the building has an abundance of light and space, with lots of access for outdoor learning, with beautifully landscaped gardens and courtyard areas. The school also features a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), a sensory room, fitness suite, hydrotherapy pool and splash pool.

Since its opening, Woodland View School was shortlisted for Project of the Year – Inclusive Design at the Learning Places Scotland Conference in November 2023. We are delighted to have played a part in this fantastic, modern ASN school development, which has had such a positive impact on both its students and staff.
