Trinity Road Reimagined: Lloyds Halifax Headquarters
Lloyds Banking Group has completed a major £116 million heritage-led refurbishment of its Grade II-listed Trinity Road headquarters in Halifax. Originally opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1974, the iconic brutalist building has been sensitively transformed by Wates Smartspace and Aitken Turnbull Architects into a modern, high-performance workplace for around 3,500 colleagues.
A standout feature of the retrofit is a bespoke version of Metal Technology’s System 17-65 curtain wall system in bronze anodised finish, which was carefully designed with 10 new profile extrusions to replicate the original façade appearance, while delivering significantly improved thermal performance and low U-values. A key requirement of the project was the use of 65 tons of ultra-low carbon aluminium using Metal Technology’s RecycAL 1.9 which offered a carbon reduction of over 68%. This has helped the building achieve an EPC A rating and a threefold improvement in energy efficiency, all while preserving the distinctive character of the landmark structure. Further Metal Technology products installed were System 5-20D Hi+ Door, System 17 Curtain Walling, and System 10-35 Hi+ Commercial Door.
The project incorporates extensive sustainability measures, including biodiverse green roofs, a living wall, rainwater harvesting and high levels of recycled materials. The result is a bright, flexible and wellbeing-focused office environment that successfully balances heritage conservation with the demands of contemporary hybrid working.
